What are Prep-to-Play Drills?

As we all know, a good warm-up forms the foundation for every training and game. It is vital that the body is prepared for all activities like running. Work to build the agility of the athlete, and meet the physical demands of the game before starting a session. The program is primarily designed to maximise performance and reduce injuries.

There are four different levels of warm-up provided to suit up your athlete and form their athleticism before each session starts. Here are some of the prep-to-play drills you can use.

Ground Balls

Winning the ball on the ground is vital for team success. AFL is a highly contested game on the ground. Players need to be taught to perform ground ball skills safely and effectively, to avoid head, neck, and shoulder injuries.
Ball Carrying Drills

During this drill, the players should be able to learn how to receive, break, or avoid a tackle. Ball carrying drills are important, as they allow players to increase their confidence and improve their ability to make and take contact from opponents, while still controlling the ball. Disposal under pressure is one marker that sets apart the great players from the rest of the pack.

Aerial Contests Drills 

As a coach, you need to design drills that allow your athletes to practice safe techniques in all the elements of aerial contests. During drills of this kind, players and coaches need to practice moving purposefully to the contest, preparation footwork, launching, marking, and landing. By doing drills of this kind, you can reduce knee, ankle, head, shoulder and finger injuries all the while improving your competitiveness in the air.

Coaching the Tackler

During drills of this nature, coaches and players should practice how to safely execute a tackle, and educate them on what duty of care they have to themselves and also to their opponent. During this drill, players can explore techniques in any controlled situations prior to proper gameplay.
